■ What they show
In January 2014 NPR reported on new Obama administration guidance discouraging 'zero tolerance' school discipline and suspensions. After the 2018 Parkland shooting, Manhattan Institute fellow Max Eden testified to a House subcommittee that schools had rushed to cut suspensions under the guidance, creating unsafe environments. Education Week covered his testimony.
■ The other side
At the same hearing, Eden acknowledged that Broward County's diversion program predated the federal guidance, and the FBI told lawmakers there was no indication the discipline policy was related to the shooting.
