■ The claim

After the New York Post published emails from a laptop attributed to Hunter Biden, Politico ran a story headlined that the story was Russian disinformation according to dozens of former intelligence officials. The 51 signers' letter itself said they had no evidence of Russian involvement, only that it bore the earmarks of an information operation; Twitter and Facebook limited the Post's story.

■ What actually happened

In March 2022 The New York Times reported that emails from the cache had been authenticated by people familiar with them, and The Washington Post had forensic experts verify thousands of emails from the data. No evidence emerged that the laptop was a Russian operation. In June 2024 federal prosecutors used the laptop and its messages as evidence in Hunter Biden's gun trial, where an FBI agent testified about its contents (on cross-examination she said she could not personally rule out changes before the FBI obtained it). Twitter's CEO later called blocking the Post story a mistake.

■ The proof

NYT (Mar. 16, 2022) and Washington Post (Mar. 30, 2022) authentication reporting; laptop admitted as prosecution evidence in U.S. v. Hunter Biden (D. Del., June 2024).
